FARM DESCRIPTION

Seeds Farm is a 50-acre organic farm in Northfield, Minnesota which grows 18 acres of certified organic and GAP vegetables for wholesale accounts, including food coops, restaurants, distributors, cafeterias, public schools, and food shelves. We are two miles south from downtown Northfield, a town of 20,000 people, and 45 minutes south of the Twin Cities. Seeds Farm is woman owned and managed by Becca Carlson and has been in operation since 2010. We strive for the triple bottom line of sustainability; social, environmental, and financial.

Our 18 acres of vegetables include 1/3 acre of high tunnels for season extension. We grow in bare soil as well as raised plastic beds (experimenting with mulched straw in-between). We host monthly Dinner at the Farms, open for the public to come out to the farm and enjoy a locally made meal from our veggies, community, and music. We love farming and try hard to cultivate a fun and meaningful workplace.

Responsibilities: This person will work with the current manager of Seeds Farm in all operations of a diversified 18 acre organic vegetable farm. Responsibilities include all aspects of diverse vegetable farming such as (but are not limited to): work in the high tunnels and greenhouse, irrigation, cultivation, tractor operation, crop planning, data collection, crew management, light construction, pest and fertility scouting and management, and harvest. This position is year round, though expect to work 40-55 hours during the peak season and 25-35 hours in the slow season.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate would be self motivated, open minded, positive, a team player, and a good problem solver. Candidates should have 2+ years on a commercial scale vegetable farm growing diverse vegetables, have a desire to make a 3+ year (ideally longer) commitment to the farm and a desire to take an ownership mentality over certain areas of the farm. Experience in all aspects of farming is not required, as long as there is a strong aptitude to learn. Experience in safe and effective tractor operation is required. Skills in tractor repair/mechanics, carpentry, plumbing and general handiwork are highly sought after but are not required.

Benefits: This year round position has a salary of $35,000. More hours during the peak season, less hours during the off season (with a few weeks for winter break). Access to free vegetables when in season.  2 week PTO after one full season. Access to land and equipment if you'd like to start your own project (hobby or small enterprise). Most importantly, meaningful work, an opportunity to grow in a career you love, and working with a crew of like minded veggie and environmental enthusiasts!

Packshed Manager $14-16/hr DOE

The packshed manager is in charge of the operations in the packshed. PM will receive product from the field and ensure that it is washed properly and safely, packed, labeled, and sent out in a timely manner. Attention to detail and efficiency is a must for this position, as well as leadership for other folks on the packshed team. The PM will be in the packshed 1-3 days a week, depending on the harvest and time of year, and will work with the general crew the rest of the week. PM will work closely with the harvest manager and farm manager to ensure the right amount of the right quality of produce gets out to the right customer.

This position starts in April and goes through October, possibly November, depending on the season.

General Farm Crew $12-15/hr DOE (3 positions)
These three positions are span the gamete of tasks on a diverse vegetable farm, which keeps work exciting! Very few days are similar. On a wholesale vegetable farm, the Farm Crew will spend their days caring for vegetables from all stages from seed to delivery. We all work hard on this farm, there will be days where we harvest peppers all day. But there are also days that are more diverse  where we may trellis tomatoes for a few hours, plant seeds in the greenhouse for a few hours, and cultivate a field of squash after lunch.

This position starts in late April/early May-October

Harvest Crew $12/hr (2 positions)

Seeds Farm works an 8-9 hour day with a 45 min unpaid lunch, though there are *few* times we expect the crew to work a few extra hours if the weather requires us to. We will do our best to communicate this ahead of time, but it may come up last minute (for example getting the onions planted before the forecasted rain.  We expect our crew to work in all weather conditions, rain or shine, hot or cold. Farmers are encouraged to take veggies home to enjoy!

This position starts in June-September
